Italian Estates: Davide Iafisco Smooth Billiard (2016) Tobacco Pipe

Inspired in equal measure by the classic Anglo-French marques of old and the contemporary artisan makers of modern times, Davide Iafisco is an Italian artisan whose body of work spans many styles. This Billiard is on the more classic end of Iafisco's style, being a fairly compact and rather faithful iteration of the classic profile, though one that admirably showcases some unique features. The transition is wide, and it gives way to a subtly tapering shank that's extended a bit in comparison to other Billiards, this extension pulling some of the visual weight away from the bowl. A more swiftly tapering stem of black vulcanite pairs to the shank, completing the aft side and admirably balancing a plump, pert, Bulb-like bowl at the fore. Said bowl stands atop a rounded heel, its walls forming a low-set waist and taking on a slight, arcing taper to the domed rim: offering a comfortable feel in hand and lending this piece a charming look. The right flank of this bowl is carved to include a broad patch of organic plateau, contrasting the smooth, ruby-tinged finish that dresses the rest of the stummel.
