Japanese Estates: Takeo Arita Partially Rusticated Bent Shield (Y)(167) (2006) Tobacco Pipe

Product Number: 004-007-0580

What sets Takeo Arita's creations apart from those of other carvers? Well, you could say it's his attention to line, always shaping his numbers with clean, crisp lines that guide the eye along the entirety of the composition. You might suggest it's his unique technique, performing the majority of the shaping and finishing by hand using rotary tools, hand files, and old-fashioned sandpaper; or even that he drills his tobacco chambers with a hand drill, relying on excellent hand-eye coordination and precision. Someone else might maintain, however, that it's his fantastic finishes: a combination of smooth polished briar and rotary tool rustication — ensuring his exquisite lines are never compromised by blasting away the briar. You can be the judge for yourself, but I would suggest it's no one aspect or another, but rather his ability to combine them all in one beautiful composition.
