Japanese Estates: Tsuge Ikebana Smooth Calabash (F) (137) (2011)

Product Number: 004-007-0894

We've seen a variety of shapes come out of the Tsuge Ikebana workshop, but the Calabash has been somewhat of a rarity. Those that we have seen have normally sported a signature Danish flowing profile. While this Ikebana still maintains some of the school's aesthetic, it is much more compact. Powerful and upright, its oval bowl features a dual bevel at the rim and a delicate taper that emphasizes its broad shoulders. The transition is much more angled as well, further augmented by a slight spur at the heel. Its shank is neither tapered nor flared; short and straight past the transition, it ends abruptly in a crisp, clean, yet barely noticeable bevel. Of course, its jet-black stem bears the rest of the visual weight — completing the composition with poise and elegant minimalism. The grain is simply remarkable, with flame leaping up along the flanks and front and a spectacular display of birdseye along the rim. Truly a work of art, and despite some rim darkening and small scratches around the bowl, condition is good.
