Japanese Estates: Smio Satou Smooth Bent Dublin
Product Number: 004-007-1002
This style of bent Dublin is signature Smio Satou, and yet the Japanese carver is able to vary his renditions, keeping each one fresh and unique. What unites each iteration is a steady, almost Hawkbill-like curve through the shank and stem and boldly flaring, thick-walled bowl up front. Sometimes Satou extends the lines of the shank into the heel, coming to a hard point; other times, as seen here, the heel lines are rounded off, the heel remaining firm but considerably softer in profile. Dressed in a traditional color palette, this one boasts a stunning array of flame grain across the bowl, and though the rim shows some minor darkening, it's saturated in vivid birdseye.-Truett Smith
