Japanese Estates: Tsuge Ikebana Smooth Bent Egg (119) (2009) (Unsmoked)
Product Number: 004-007-1127
The Tsuge Ikebana line presents artisan-made pieces under the direction of Kazuhiro Fukuda. Now, each of the three artisans stamp pipes with their individual names underneath the Ikebana umbrella, but back in 2009, when this piece was made, master Fukuda left his pipes unstamped. It's a bent Egg rendition that trades overall length for bowl height, resulting in a compact nosewarmer of Stack-like chamber dimensions. Most attractive in silhouette is Fukuda's deft shaping of the pipe's undercurve as it gently arches from the bowl's fore, through the heel, and into the upward-turning shank. It's, then, balanced by the slender stem's slight recurve. With a subtle waistline, the bowl conforms delightfully to wrapped fingers, and the honey-blonde stain highlights a stunning array of windswept grain. Unsmoked.-Truett Smith
