Japanese Estates: Ichi Kitahara Smooth Tomato with Boxwood (2014)

Product Number: 004-007-1210

Ichi Kitahara studied under Hiroyuki Tokutomi, so it's no surprise that Ichi's style displays a strong Danish influence combined with a Japanese appreciation for organic stylistic cues. Both are on display in this Tomato — the bowl flaring into a rounded, high-set waistline, not unlike other iteration we've seen from Kitahara. Behind, then, the elongated shank flares toward the stem, hinting at one of Lars Ivarsson's iconic design elements. Such a feature also lends the bowl a more poised, perched posture, accentuating the organic motif, while the curl of the stem and shank balance out the bowl's forward cant. Marked by stunning grain and a trim boxwood accent at the stem base, this is a striking piece from Kitahara.
