Japanese Estates: Tsuge Ikebana Partially Sandblasted Freehand (Ohi) (H) (217) (2014)
Product Number: 004-007-1213
Tsuge Ikebana consists of three carvers with each artisan producing their own individual pipes under the workshop's name, which in Japanese means "living flowers." Yoshirou Ohi is one of the artisans and prior to becoming a pipe maker he attended the Tokyo Metropolitan Mokojima Technical High School, from which he graduated with a degree that would prepare him for a long career involving the manufacture of precision automotive parts. That background has translated remarkably well into his career as a pipe maker, each piece reflecting Ohi's decades of experience and high standards. Stylistically, his compositions are defined by their dynamism, often employing crisp lines and ridges to accentuate spectacular grain patterns with exactness. All of those aforementioned elements present themselves spectacularly with this large, intricate Freehand design.
The bowl resembles a dramatically canted Volcano in profile, curving to the right when viewed from an aerial perspective. It's a design that's rife with asymmetry, organicism, and incredibly detailed, demanding line work. Ridgelines along the bowl and shank accentuate the firm in-hand feel of this large piece while also framing the smooth polished areas. The flattened panel along the bowl's fore helps inform its curvature, with the innermost portion of the rim neatly chamfered and left smooth to match. The bowl's fore and base are essentially the same elements on this piece due to the bowl's impressive degree of cant, but features a section of smooth briar that's shaped in the profile of Honshu, the second largest island in the Japanese archipelago. The rest of the stummel is dominated by sandblasted grain with seemingly endless waves of ring grain traversing its surface. It's a complex design that fits in perfectly with Ohi's portfolio and one that warrants appreciation any time it's near.- Jeffery Sitts
