Japanese Estates: Smio Satou Smooth Bent Dublin with Tsuishu Tobacco Pipe

Product Number: 004-007-1268

Smio Satou makes some of the most sought-after pipes in the world, and makes only about 40 a year since leaving his 25-year tenure at Tsuge. Here we see a uniquely Japanese interpretation of Danish shaping, the end of the shank expanding and textured with plateau, and the oval bowl heightened by a distinct dome at the rim. The grain is magnificent on this lightly stained composition, its vertical tendrils rising to the crisp ridgeline of the rim, whose surface is studded with tight birdseye.

The finish is especially durable and glossy, thanks to the multiple applications of traditional, breathable Japanese lacquer, urushi, for which Satou is known. Also notable is the accent at the base of the stem. That accent material is often utilized by Satou and is called tsuishu, for which very thin, multi-colored layers of Japanese lacquer are accumulated, taking months to produce. Each of these elements is painstakingly perfected and together bring this pipe to the highest levels of craftsmanship.
