Japanese Estates: Takeo Arita Smooth Bent Egg with Silver and Mammoth (062) (Y) (2004) Tobacco Pipe
Product Number: 004-007-1283
A sweeping and decidedly sculptural bent Egg from Takeo Arita, this sinuously curved pipe brings to mind a lean marine creature popping its head out of the water. Many of the Japanese artisan's pipes display a strong sense of forward movement, with this organic piece well representing that aesthetic. The upward-urging bowl displays a supple, rather Scoop-like form, the lifting, broad heel contributing to that posture. In opposition to the curvaceous bowl, this aerodynamic pipe presents panels through the quite gestural, gracefully arcing shank, with the half-saddle mouthpiece flicking upward. It's dressed in a warm, auburn contrast stain, unveiling gorgeous licks of flame grain across the bowl, while swirling birdseye encapsulates the underside. It's clear Takeo demonstrates precision and skill, as the shaping of the briar had to have been no small feat in this flowing form. Adding further flourish is a pale band of mammoth with a trim ring of silver seemingly wrapping it, in a touch of whimsy. The artisan has crafted few pipes since 2010, making the estate market one of the few places to find his highly sought-after work.-Angela Robertson
