Misc. Estates: Michail Kyriazanos Smooth Bent Dublin with Wenge (2014) (Unsmoked)
Product Number: 004-008-3044
From a carver who seems to specialize in classic English shaping, this bent Dublin appears remarkably Danish in style. Its flowing profile, smooth taper, sweeping heel, and flared shank are all ubiquitous to the school. That being said, there's something quite unique about Michail's approach as well. The bowl features a rather plump form despite its overall Dublin aesthetic. The transition is also far more defined than we would normally expect when examining the Danish canon. Indeed, it seems that Kyriazanos has come into his own here in this piece. Rather than extending the briar the length of the stummel, he chose to incorporate a broad bit of wenge into the shank — offering quite the visual break between the bowl and stem. To complement, he's finished the briar in a warm contrast stain to perfectly accentuate the ascending grain patterns: birdseye transitions into 3/4 before bursting forth in vibrant flame. The pipe's overall smooth texture is accented by Michail's clever treatment of the rim — leaving the top rugged and craggy with a natural crown of plateau. Quite an addition to the Kyriazanos lineup, I imagine this lovely piece would be just the thing to top off a collection.
