Misc. Estates: Grechukhin Sandblasted Bent Tomato with Olivewood (2014) (Unsmoked)
Product Number: 004-008-3541
Compact, rotund, pregnant with imminent implied movement, it is for pipes such as this that we have become such ardent devotees of the great Russian's work. On its face, it seems a simple, straightforward interpretation of the Danish tomato, referencing the standard Danish aesthetic lexicon as set down by the likes of Lars Ivarsson and Jess Chonowitsch (perhaps a bit of each in equal measure, actually). But this pipe, and Grechukhin's body of work, is so much more than that. By moving the forward-most edge of the front of the bowl up and more obliquely rounding the line that flows from that along the bottom of the bowl to the back of the shank, Grechukhin as completely altered the character of the shape. He's limited it's visual completeness, instead lending it a sense of not so much implied forward motion as a sense of imminent forward motion, an object about to spring into action.
And the pipe is, as one would expect, completed beautifully. The contrast stained sandblast is superb, with the red and black highlights emphasizing the vertical grain while the soft, but detailed, blast accentuates the growth rings. The olivewood cap and short Danish-style saddle stem complete the composition perfectly.
