Misc. Estates: Peter Matzhold Smooth Bent Dublin (E)
Product Number: 004-008-5082
We all know that Peter Matzhold is known for his ability to coax serious grain out of great blocks of briar. Still, even having seen hundreds of Peter's pipes over the years, I can't help but be impressed when I run across a pipe grained like this. Superb straight grain covers the whole bowl, but the left side is so good that I'm suffering from heart palpitations. I really like Matzhold's half-saddle stems too. He uses them to great effect to maintain the visual line running from the end of the button, along the bottom of the stem, under the shank and bowl and up the front of the bowl, terminating at the rim. This line, so central to so many of Peter's shapes, holds his compositions together while he aesthetically explores various structural ideas elsewhere in the composition. One can certainly tell that Peter has an architect's eye as he deftly combines seemingly disparate elements, yet holds the whole composition together so perfectly.- Sykes Wilford
