Misc. Estates: Alexander Berezhnoy Smooth Tomato with Bamboo (270)
Product Number: 004-008-5194
We've only received one other piece from Ukrainian carver Alexander Berezhnoy. Out of context, I would be inclined to attribute this long-shanked Tomato to the Japanese school — its plump, perched nature and lithe bamboo extension, lending it a strong organic disposition that's common among Japanese artisan's. Alexander shows off his artistic eye and deft craftsmanship in this piece. The upward curl of the bamboo is balanced out by the slightly bent mouthpiece, while the base of the saddle stem flows naturally into the rhythm of the dark bamboo's three knuckles. At the end, then, the bulbous bowl seems to grow from out of the flaring transition, topped with a crown of natural plateau to emphasize the organic motif. Lovely work all around.-Truett Smith
