Misc. Estates: Michail Revyagin Smooth Acorn
Product Number: 004-008-5598
Michail Revyagin's overflowing creativity was difficult for him to keep in check when he started learning pipemaking, but he forced himself to stay away from pursuing his own ideas until he had a firm foundation making classic shapes, then he forced himself to copy a Bo Nordh design over and over until he understood that. Only then did he start exploring his own vision, which has profoundly benefited from such an education in the classics. This piece is remarkable, an Acorn with subtle bends and curves, as natural looking as though it had grown on a tree branch, but packed with modern engineering and sublime smoking characteristics. The grain is spectacular, the bowl upright, and the shank thin near the transition and widening in Ivarsson fashion toward the boxwood fitment and saddle stem. Light and intuitive in hand, this is a shape that can be appreciated for shape alone in silhouette, but once the other features are added, combine for a pipe that anyone should be proud to see on their rack.- Chuck Stanion
