Misc. Estates: Andrey Grigoriev Sandblasted Pot with Boxwood (Unsmoked)
Product Number: 004-008-5771
Based out of St. Petersburg, Andrey Grigoriev originally began carving pipes in 2004 simply as a hobby while working as a professional engineer. In 2006, Andrey met fellow Russian carver Viktor Yashtylov and became his pupil, furthering his pipemaking education as Viktor's apprentice. Grigoriev worked alongside Yashtylov, adopting some his methods and developing a style that's noticeably influenced by Viktor's work. Here, Grigoriev presents a compact take on the Pot, managing to pack plenty of substance into quite a small package. The bowl is the main focal point, with its robust, plump proportions accentuated by the trim oval shank and arrow straight stem out back. The rim's slightly undulated in nature, and the chamber is surrounded by thick, insulating walls that are well-equipped to provide plenty of protection in hand. It's dressed in a low-profile sandblast that unveils some particularly wild grain patterns underneath an earthy brown stain. It was a wise color choice as it really makes the pale boxwood accent along the shank end stand out. This is only the second piece we've seen from Andrey and I certainly hope we see more because he's remarkably talented. Unsmoked.- Jeffery Sitts
