Misc. Estates: Alex Brishuta Reverse Calabash Rusticated Freehand (16370) (Unsmoked)
Product Number: 004-008-5773
Ukrainian-based artisan Alex Brishuta is also a metallurgical engineer and previously worked in web-design and advertising prior to carving his first pipe in 2009. Other than using some tools for drilling chambers and channels, Brishuta doesn't use a lathe to shape his pipes, opting to create works solely by hand. It certainly opens up more opportunities for finishing techniques and highly unique shapes as evidenced by this bold Freehand design. The rustication of this piece features deep grooves and channels, each segment stained alternating colors of red and orange with its ridges stained a black color to really make them pop out. The rugged texture and colorful stain make for a piece that's as fascinating to hold in hand as it is to stare at. Not to mention how it'll surely start some entertaining conversations and provide for a piece that will standout in any collection. A flattened panel along the bowl's lower fore allows it to sit sturdily upright on flat surfaces. This offering also features reverse calabash engineering, with an expansive cooling chamber held within the shank. And if that weren't enough, it's offered here in unsmoked condition and is the first piece we've ever seen from Brishuta.- Jeffery Sitts
