Misc. Estates: Grechukhin Smooth Volcano (G) (2017)
Product Number: 004-008-6103
Compared to his various Rhodesians, Apples, and the like, the Volcano is a fairly underrepresented shape within Vladimir's overall body of work. Scarce as it may be, I'd say the design itself is quite conducive to Grechukhin's playful and muscular style, Vladimir here having lent the bowl one of his signature "drunken" cants, with an inward, sweeping bevel along the fore. Likewise, the quick, upward-flicking motion of the shank and elongated transition suit the dynamic style of the shape quite well, further emphasizing that whimsical forward gesture in profile.
Then there's the way Vladimir's handled the base. While many makers have experimented with Volcano bases, coming up with clever solutions to keep the lines and low-set waistline pronounced, Vladimir has really pushed aesthetic boundaries here, accentuating that waistline with a firm, hard ridge around its circumference and softer style of paneled plane down to the base proper. What's more, rather than lending the underside a convex bevel, Grechukhin's fashioned it into a cleft of sorts, with a pronounced taper inward near the center. It makes for an intriguing feel in hand, and also allows the pipe to sit quite steadily on a flat surface — all while framing the block's exquisite grain beautifully. Excellent piece from Grechukhin here, well deserving of his prestigious "G" designation.- Andrew Wike
