Misc. Estates: Grechukhin Smooth Asymmetric Acorn with Bamboo (2016)
Product Number: 004-008-6106
Vladimir Grechukhin doesn't produce many renditions of the Acorn shape, making this piece quite a standout. The asymmetry applied to this design is unique in itself — very wave-like, with a rolling and flowing gesture, something more often associated with shapes like asymmetric Volcanoes. It calls to mind the shaping cues often utilized by Japanese artisans, with the Russian carver here drawing influence from that aesthetic. Furthering that Japanese style is a shank extension of bamboo, the rhythm of the bamboo drawing the eye forward into the bowl's dramatic forward cant.
