Misc. Estates: Alexander Tupitsyn Sandblasted Billiard (2018)

Product Number: 004-008-6076

Alexander Tupitsyn isn't one to often fashion classically inclined pipe chart standards, so we've only seen several straight Billiards from the Russian carver over the years. It may not be a shape to which he's typically drawn, but that doesn't mean he's not adept at rendering one, as this piece clearly proves. Compact of length and decidedly muscular in bowl form with a hint at neoclassic proportions, this offering is a gorgeous representation of the St. Petersburg school and is evidence of Grechukhin's influence on Tupitsyn. With soft, Danish-like lines and a slight taper toward the rim, the bowl presents a hearty feel in hand as its chubby proportions fit well into the gentle lines of the profile and subtle cheeking at the transition. It's a beautiful take on the traditional shape and wears a striking contrast stain whose vertically inclined visual texture intersects beautifully with the horizontal ring grain rippling up the flanks.
