Misc. Estates: Sam Cui Smooth Chubby Blowfish Reverse Calabash with Boxwood (2015) (Unsmoked) Tobacco Pipe

I think the Blowfish is an irresistible shape because it so economically utilizes the best grain available in a block of briar, generally with both birdseye and variously oriented straight grain on generous display. This is a relatively small piece, fitting with Sam Cui's typical Blowfish renditions, but all of the details are apparent. Birdseye graces the flanks in unending swirls and cross grain runs along the flattened band of briar running along the underside and up the fore. The decorative accent of boxwood offers color contrast while still remaining understated and tastefully hidden within the shank face. Furthermore, this piece from Cui is imbued with reverse Calabash engineering — an uncommon feature within the context of his other Blowfish designs. It's presented here in unsmoked condition.
