Misc. Estates: Doctor's Smooth Pot with Bamboo and Mokume
Product Number: 004-008-6716
Though his eye for detail is beyond adept, his use of accents especially unique, and his eye for design as playfully idiosyncratic as they come, Roman Kovalev leaves no doubt about his intentions for his work's impact on the pipe smoking community. Put simply: his works are exquisite works of art in their own right, but his pipes aren't meant to be mere collector's items. They're meant for smoking. And this robust Pot from the Russian artisan is well-equipped to provide years of smoking enjoyment.
While it's fairly short in terms of overall length, this Pot is a proportionately substantial design. It's also one of the most organic renditions of the shape I've encountered, featuring plateau circling the softly inflated rim and a thick piece of bamboo extending the shank's length. Adorning the end of the bamboo is a band of Mokume, a laminated metal that originated in Japan 300 years ago and was first developed for production of decorative sword fittings. Mokume-gane is the name for the metalworking procedure and closely translates to "wood grain metal" as it describes the way the metal emulates the appearance of natural wood grain. It's used beautifully on this pipe before leading to the stylized stem, its expansion ring perfectly continuing the bamboo's shaping.- Jeffery Sitts
