Misc. Estates: Grechukhin Smooth Retro Dublin (G) (2018)
Product Number: 004-008-6730
At first glance, you might be surprised to see Vladimir Grechukhin's Cyrillic moniker etched onto this straight Dublin, and even more surprising is the 2018 date stamp next to it. Over the recent years, the Russian carver has excelled at producing pieces often imbued with a strong sense of muscularity and a whimsically tasteful use of asymmetry, yet neither of those aspects are displayed here and that style has not always been a part of Vladimir's work. That's where the "Retro" title comes into play.
Grechukhin has been carving pipes for a long time, and when an artisan has been involved in pipe making for more than several decades, their style is bound to evolve, both with the industry at large as well as in line with the maker's personal preferences and conventions. In the case of this straight Dublin, it's a rendition that Vladimir made previously back in the 1970s when he first starting making pipes and was one of his first shapes ever fashioned. It hearkens back to a time when Grechukhin's portfolio was dominated by sleek-lined iterations of classic designs with traditional finishes and an inherent leaning toward the work of his mentor Alexei Fyodorov.
Shape-wise, this piece bears an inherent Danish inclination, the bowl pluming from out of a Horn-like transition. The bowl's aft line is nearly perpendicular to the shank and stem, while the fore eases out of the heel to give the bowl a generous degree of forward cant. From this, then, Grechukhin has fashioned the bowl perfectly in line with its streaking flame grain; the vertical striations sweeping up the bowl to terminate at a crisp ridgeline that separates the flanks from a craggy crown of plateau at the rim. It's a design that feels wonderful in hand — the insulating walls thick and palm-filling and the transition smooth and gentle — while the sleek and slender, tapered stem bears much of the piece's overall length for a straight Prince-like motif. Stunning work from the Russian carver and a fetching tribute to his evolution as a carver, it's perfectly deserving of his prestigious "G" stamp (a reference to Fyodorov's "F" grade) and is one of only three pieces made in 2018 as an homage to Grechukhin's pipe-making roots.-Truett Smith
