Misc. Estates: Sam Cui Smooth Bent Apple with Horn (2015) (Unsmoked)
Product Number: 004-008-6763
Chinese artisan pipe maker Sam Cui has always been drawn to artistry and aesthetic beauty as evidenced by his 15-year career in Japanese cuisine as well as his hobbies as a photographer and woodworker. Now, that creative nature and attention to detail serve him as a full-time artisan carver. Here, Cui presents a Danish-inspired bent Apple design, the bowl tapering from its plump flanks up toward the rim and is rife with beautiful grain with mesmerizing birdseye patterns positioned along the flanks. The shank is incredibly brief, with the horn extension making up most of its length and subtly flaring out in traditional Danish fashion. That flare is echoed again at the disc-shaped base of the gracefully down-turned stem while the horn ferrule is reinforced with a brass inset ring for a mount-style tenon configuration. It's presented here in unsmoked condition.- Jeffery Sitts
