Misc. Estates: Grechukhin Sandblasted Bent Apple with Bone (2014) (Unsmoked)
Product Number: 004-008-6790
Following a much trimmer and more diminutive approach than usual, here Russian master Vladimir Grechukhin has presented us with an elegant take on the bent Apple. Rather than keeping the silhouette tight-knit and muscular as is the norm for the carver, Grechukhin has elongated the S-curve of the shank and stem, which works to balance the plump, rounded curves of the bowl and lend the piece a continuous, fluid grace in profile. It's finished here in a brilliantly executed sandblast, unearthing layer after layer of concentric rings around the plump bowl. Contrasting the rest of the piece's warm color palette is a pale bone accent along the stem base, before the mouthpiece concludes in a soft downturn. Perhaps most surprising is that this pipe is still unsmoked.- Andrew Wike
