Misc. Estates: Lomma Smooth Bent Dublin (Unsmoked)

Product Number: 004-008-7244

How does one transfigure from a skilled woodworker to a skilled, artisan pipe maker? Becoming sailing pals with Tom Eltang is a start, at least it was for Lars Jonsson, who became friends with Tom and would hang out in Tom's workshop. But one can't just sit around that workshop, and Lars was one day talked into helping with a project, rusticating a series of pipes. He liked it, and was soon learning other details of pipe making, finally making pipes himself and studying with Hans "Former" Nielsen as well. Former and Eltang are pretty heavy hitters in pipe making, and a skilled craftsman like Lars can become world-class under that kind of guidance, which he did, obviously, as this bent Dublin so ably demonstrates.

Lomma's bent Dublin iterations tend to fall within one of two categories. Some are more low-set and fluid through their transitions, almost Horn-like, while others, like the one presented here, feature a more upright posture and well-defined transition. This particular piece showcases Jonsson's penchant for Danish-inspired pipes — evident in the orientation of plateau at both the rim, as well as the the elongation and slight flare of the shank. Lars has done well to seamlessly curl the underside of the shank through the heel and into the bowl, cohering the entire composition together. Lively streaks of flame grain wrap around the bowl's tall flanks, each tendril rising upward toward the plateau crowned rim. The contrast stain does magnificent work highlighting the grain of this piece, which follows the lines of the bowl and enhances the overall shape for a pipe anyone should be proud to add to their collection. It's presented here in unsmoked condition.
