Misc. Estates: Grechukhin Smooth Volcano (2017) (Unsmoked)
Product Number: 004-008-7285
In the 1970s, Alexei Fyoforov was considered Russia's master pipe carver, an artisan who taught and mentored a young man named Vladimir Grechukhin. Now, Grechukin is the preeminent artisan pipe maker in Russia and carries on the mentoring tradition with pupils of his own who have earned their own reputations, names like Alexander Tupitsyn and Sergey Dyomin. Influencing more than just Russian pipe design, however, Vladimir's impact on the world of pipes is felt worldwide, his design language now recognized as the St. Petersburg style. While himself influenced by Danish design cues, Grechukhin favors muscular, compact interpretations, hearty proportions in compact dimensions. He's far from alone in his appreciation of these designs, and his work is sought after by collectors the world over.
One of Grechuckhin's popular shapes, his Volcano, is one we don't often get the pleasure of seeing. In fact, only about half a dozen have ever come to us in either new or estate condition, which makes this pipe quite rare, even more so because it has somehow remained unsmoked. The Russian master's skill in teasing out the best in the briar's grain is clearly evident here, with stunning striations rising in concert with the bowl's forward surge and a dense field of birdseye packing the broad underside. It's dressed in a warm, striking contrast stain and smooth finish, making the grain unmistakable even from across the room.
The linework of this piece is truly remarkable, the sloped sides of the bowl sweeping down to a ridgeline that, like pooling, cooling lava, surrounds the base in a palm-filling redoubt before giving way to a more discrete panel all along the pipe's underside. The below-the-waterline aspect of the base continues right up the shank's underside, forming a gesturally vertical oval shape where it reaches the push-style stem. The shank flares as it lifts upward, its profile continued perfectly by the base of the stem before giving way to a hand-cut saddle mouthpiece, gently downturned for smoking comfort. A stunning creation from an iconic master, this pipe will elevate any collection.-Joel Balyeat
