Misc. Estates: Michael Parks Sandblased Bent Billiard with Bamboo (V.8)
Product Number: 004-008-7460
Michael Parks, admired Canadian artisan, imbues his shapes with a classic grace often associated with traditional French and English designs, but, like most talented pipe makers, he adds a unique flourish all his own, rendering pieces that emphasize precision, playful variation, and ornate accent materials. Parks does not make a large number of pipes per year, making this bent Billiard a highly collectible find that encapsulates all the aforementioned qualities in a rather robust design.
Eye-catching and vibrant against the stoic black of the stummel and stem, the two knuckles of bamboo, a tasteful material that hearkens back to the briar-saving days of Dunhill's "Whangees," add a bright, organic accent to the shape's profile. The bowl boasts a generous chamber capacity, its unique shape maintaining the rigid stature of a Billiard but with a plump heel and soft roundness reminiscent of an Egg. The thick transition lends the piece a firm bit of muscularity, close in girth to the transition of an Oom Paul, before giving way to an upturned shank-and-stem combination that balances out the robust proportions up front with delicate lines and a gentle curvature, one that ensures a comfortable smoking posture. Finished in one of Park's rich sandblasts, something he is well-known for, the stummel takes on a dark, craggy texture full of detail.--Davin Hylton
