Misc. Estates: Sam Cui Smooth Bent Dublin with Boxwood (2019) Tobacco Pipe
Product Number: 004-008-8588
Chinese carver Sam Cui often gravitates toward particularly compact pipes, yet he often pairs them with bulbous, rounded forms, as opposed to the broadly flaring bowl of this bent Dublin. That said, this design is a shape Sam has been exploring over the years and can be seen in previous pieces throughout his work. An elusive shape, the design combines elements of the Horn, Dublin, and Zulu — the flaring bowl being significantly canted; the transition being gentle, yet still more upright than a Horn's; and the stem prompting an obviously serpentine profile. An incredibly fluid and flowing piece, it displays no shortage of inherent momentum, the curl through stem, shank, and heel, and is beautifully balanced and impressively consistent. Said dynamism bursts forth in an undulating crown of natural plateau at the rim, such orientation contributing to the streaks of grain across the stummel. A handsome, mahogany contrast stain keeps the presentation noticeable yet traditionally reserved, the lighter hues of the finish matching with the boxwood accent.
