Misc. Estates: James Gilliam (JSEC) Smooth Acorn with Bamboo Tobacco Pipe
Product Number: 004-008-8611
An American pipe maker who now lives in Germany, James Gilliam spent years in the U.S. Navy before personally restoring some of his damaged pipes led him to carve pieces of his own. This Acorn is a fine representation of Gilliam's style, which tends to draw from the Danish school of design, prioritizing supple curves and clean, efficient lines. The bowl here is tall and gracefully rounded, flaring from its firm, pronounced heel to its broad, bulging rim. The petite shank strikes out from the low-set transition before giving way to two knuckles of warm bamboo, which itself gives way to a demurely curved saddle stem of jet-black vulcanite. An auburn smooth finish dresses the stummel and highlights constellations of birdseye on either flank of the bowl, providing further visual appeal to this already eye-catching design.
