Misc. Estates: Konstantinos Anastasopoulos Partially Rusticated Reverse Calabash Dublin (GKCPC) (2017) (Unsmoked) Tobacco Pipe
Product Number: 004-008-8897
Much like his fellow Greek carvers Chris Asteriou and Michail Kyriazanos, Konstantinos Anastasopoulos has a deep appreciation for classic shapes. That respect for traditional forms is essential to fully developing the fundamental skills of shaping and design as well as understanding balance, flow, and line work. Though this shape is decidedly not a traditional interpretation of the bent Dublin, it certainly does showcase Anastasopolous' keen eye for proportional balance. The shank and bowl are roughly the same size here, though the bowl, as a Dublin, flares out and cants forward as it sits atop the firm heel, lending it a touch more visual weight than the aft side. Much of this is then immediately retaken as the shank dips into a sleek, comparatively lengthy stem of jet-black vulcanite, though this serves to balance the balance the visual weight rather than focus it at the aft. The shank's increased muscularity is thanks to this pipe's drilling as a reverse Calabash piece, as the shank holds this system's condensation chamber. This particular piece is dressed in a craggy, inky-stained rustication that's contrasted by both a smooth rim and shank face, and it was made for the Greater Kansas City Pipe Club in 2017.
