Misc. Estates: LHS Sterncrest Smooth Billiard (14) Tobacco Pipe

Product Number: 004-008-11278

L&H Stern Smoking Pipes & Holders, better known as LHS, was founded by Ludwig Stern in 1893, though it was reorganized in 1911 with his brother Hugo into the pipe-making marque we know today. In their time, LHS made a number of successful lines that expanded their reach across the world, and they were recognized as one of the primary suppliers of pipes for U.S. troops in World War II. LHS closed down in the 1960s after more than half a century of operation, though their pipes remain on the estate market, including pieces like this Billiard. The transition is wide and the shank is round, its reach comprising an easy taper that continues through a band of silver at the junction before being met by a more swiftly tapering stem of black vulcanite. Up front, the bowl stands on a firm, subtly pronounced heel that supports plump, supple walls as they make an understated, arcing taper toward a domed rim. Dressing this piece is a warm, smooth finish that reveals some lovely streaks of cross grain across the left flank of the bowl.
