American Estates: Maigurs Knets Smooth Aussie Turtle (342) Tobacco Pipe

Product Number: 004-009-6813

Arguably, one might call this shape an "Aussie Double-Turtle", as there's clearly an echo going on between the design of the bowl and shank-end. As we came to expect from Maigurs, no matter how lush a shape was, or however recently he'd introduced it, the execution is just beautiful. But then Maigurs, when he was still making pipes, wasn't one to go off and produce a pipe-shape on the fly. He put a lot work into concept and modeling mock-ups of his designs before they even reached the briar-meets-bandsaw phase. This process recalls to me one of his major influences, the great Alphonse Mucha, who spent years and years developing his style and technique in obscurity, before exploding onto the Parisian scene on account of a chance commission of a poster for a play starring Sarah Bernhardt.
