American Estates: J. Alan Sandblasted Bent Bulldog (655) (2012) Tobacco Pipe
Product Number: 004-009-6788
The first time I saw this pipe I could have sworn, even if only for a single fleeting moment, that the piece had come out of the workshop of Danish legend Hans 'Former' Nielsen. Although distinctly different than the bent Bulldogs we've seen from Former from around this same period (2012), Jeff Gracik's riff on the classic shape bears a somewhat uncanny resemblance to them nonetheless. And that's because Jeff has got style, folks. From the size, cant, and slope of the saucer rim, and the convex doming of the bowl above the double-beading, the proportion of bowl size and girth to the length of the shank and the full saddle stem, down to the top-view tapering of the sides of the composition, the pipe simply screams of the Danish pipe aesthetic. Very few pipe makers can move so fluidly and with such adroitness between different schools of design, but Jeff is a young master of this foxtrot, and it's just one of the many reasons his work remains in such incredible demand: he produces a wide variety of singularly breathtaking work and is constantly surprising his customers.
