American Estates: Michael Butera Royal Classic Bent Dublin (50021)
Product Number: 004-009-11410
Considered one of the biggest influences within the American pipemaking tradition, Michael Butera is widely recognized throughout the world, with many a beginning carver have learned from Butera, either directly or indirectly. Michael's personal style often hints towards the Italian school, as is the case in this full-bodied bent Dublin. The bowl is deeply chambered and strikingly separated from the shank thanks to a crisp, neatly tucked transition, though Butera has kept the underside curve consistently parabolic from shank-end to rim. An easy jaw-hanger as well as a offering a natural feel in hand, this stunning number shows off an amazing display of grain — the forward-urging bowl is decorated in tendrils of flame and straight grain, while the rim boasts one of the densest forests of birdseye I've ever seen. For a more reserved accent, Michael has fitted the stem base with a ferrule of briar, stained a touch lighter than the stummel to provide a subtle contrast. Excellent condition too, with just some minor rim darkening.-Truett Smith
