American Estates: Todd Johnson Smooth Cherrywood with Bamboo (AL5) Tobacco Pipe
Product Number: 004-009-11607
Beginning his carving career in 2000, Todd was greatly influenced at first by Trever Talbert, and later by Tom Eltang and Lars Ivarsson. This Cherrywood is a synthesis of Japanese and Danish styles: elegant simplicity, subtle modifications, and smooth lines. It favors structure, though, as in the Japanese school, with the Cherrywood bowl inclining slightly for just a subtle curvature up to the rim, which is flat and saturated with birdseye. Three knuckles of pale bamboo comprise the shank, and the mouthpiece is slender and slight. It's an early piece; Adam Davidson estimates it was made 2003-2005. Perhaps it was made early in Todd's career, but his development was robust, and stunning pipes like this are the result.
