American Estates: J. Alan Smooth Horn (579) (2011) (Unsmoked)

Product Number: 004-009-11665

A Horn with a Calabash-like rim, this 2011 piece from Jeff Gracik, this piece displays a consistent flow and flare from shank end to rim. Here, though, Jeff has inflated the rim and positioned the chamber heavily toward the fore, lending a hefty amount of forward movement and negative space that calls to mind the Japanese school. The lower flanks of the shank and defined by crisp ridgelines that extend up the sides of the bowl, not stopping at the rim as would be conventional, but actually crossing over the chamber to separate the rim with straight grain at the front and birdseye behind. Meanwhile, the gently curling transition affords a sublime in-hand feel, while the grain across the stummel is mesmerizing and perfectly oriented. Unsmoked.
