American Estates: J.T. Cooke Sandblasted Bulldog (2000)
Product Number: 004-009-11792
Known for his bold shaping and exquisite sandblasts, J.T. Cooke is one of America's renowned artisan pipemakers. His style runs the gamut from straight up classics to more whimsical renditions of shape chart standards, though all are often fashioned with the same robust sense of proportions and overall size. Here, Cooke presents a stolid straight Bulldog. Arrow straight and crisp of line, the bowl is broad and resolute, dramatically tapered above and below the beadline around the disc-like waist. Fittingly the hearty design is dressed in one of the carver's deft sandblasts — ripples of ring grain climb up the lower bowl, leaving craters of birdseye swimming along the rim and offering a wealth of texture that doesn't break up the hard lines of the piece in profile. Just some rim darkening and scraping in the chamber to note, condition-wise.-Truett Smith
