American Estates: Alex Florov Long Shank Acorn (A+) (2009)
Product Number: 004-009-11970
Back when Alex Florov was still implementing a grading scale (before switching to only reserved Slonim for his highest pieces), the A+ stamp was the carver's second highest grain, behind the Slonim. In this 2009 piece, Florov riffs off of the iconic Lars Ivarsson design, poising a bulb of a bowl just after the svelte transition to showcase its forward-urging posture and fetching heel spur below. The shank, then, exhibits the long, sweeping curl often associated with Lars, but Florov has rendered if oval of cross section, flaring it toward the shank end both in profile and from an aerial perspective. Such a feature makes for a more dynamic sense of momentum from the smoker's vantage point. With an impressive show of grain and creamy accent to separate the stummel from the cumberland stem, it's a testament to Alex's skill at shaping not just elaborate Freehands and Fugus but Danish-inclined classics as well. There is some rim darkening, mild chamber carbonizing, and unevenness in the chamber from reaming, but all in all, condition is still good.-Truett Smith
