American Estates: Jared Coles Smooth Acorn Sitter (2018) (Unsmoked)

Product Number: 004-009-12122

Jared Coles, with his friend John Klose, made pipes for their J&J Pipes brand until taking their own directions in 2015, when Jared began making pipes under his own name. Influenced heavily by the Japanese and Danish schools of pipemaking, developed when he gained instruction from both Jeff Gracik and Todd Johnson, he is adept with asymmetry, especially creative in the design of his shanks, like on this Acorn sitter. A piece from 2018, its shank is a teardrop shape in cross section, expanding from the soft transition, flaring toward the stem, and freckled on the end with a patch of plateau to match the rim. In profile, you might not guess this piece is a sitter, but it is, and balanced firmly, providing the neat optical illusion of a nearly Pickaxe style heel that sits. In contrast to the ruby stain of the stummel and the black of the stem is a decorative and well-grained light wood, possibly maple, that curves and undulates where it meets the shank but is perfectly symmetrical along the sides of the stem. The ridge running along the lower left shank rides the bowl on the left flank and diminishes as it reaches the rim. and it's all presented with stunning, consistent vertical grain.
