American Estates: Todd Johnson Sandblasted Dublin with Fordite (Hoplite) (Unsmoked)
Product Number: 004-009-12123
A testament to Todd Johnson's creative inclinations and skilled craftsmanship, this Dublin from the American artisan combines a number of design cues from various shapes with stunning engineering, finishing, and accent work. The form immediately arrests attention in an unforgettable profile that poises a forward-curling, canted Dublin bowl on the end of slender, elongated shank. Compared to the towering height of the bowl, the shank comes across as pencil-thin; however, that's more of an optical illusion. The shank is sleek and slender, but it's not at all delicate, appearing more trim than it actually is because of its elongation and its relation to the bowl. Technically, the combination of long shank and abbreviated saddle stem liken this design to the Lovat, but Todd has taken that characteristic to the extreme, stretching the shank so much that this pipe aligns with demi-Churchwarden length. It all terminates at an ebonite stem, the base accented by Fordite: a material created from layers of dripping paint in a Ford automotive factory, the various paint colors beautifully swirling in this example. Todd was one of the first artisans to showcase the vibrant medium, and it's since grown in popularity among other carvers. Rippling ring grain coils up the flaring bowl, earning Johnson's Hoplite grade, and making for a pipe that offers endless hours of analysis and enjoyment. Unsmoked.-Truett Smith
