Balancing a broad, substantial Tomato bowl with sinuous, elegant line work through the shank and stem, this handsome piece from Brad Pohlmann is an excellent example of the American artisan's style. The lifting heel melds seamlessly into the arcing lines of the underside, bolstered by the tightly-knit transition and the subtle downward turn to the mouthpiece; that graceful line work belies the sheer breadth of the bowl, yet its presence is still known in hand, where it fills the palm for a reassuringly sturdy grip. Brad has then treated the stummel to a crisp sandblast, unveiling a mesmerizing mix of blasted birdseye and wavy ring grain, expertly highlighted by a fiery contrast stain. It's presented here in unsmoked condition.
