American Estates: Chheda Smooth Bent Dublin (351) (2016) (Unsmoked)
Product Number: 004-009-12274
Premal Chheda makes pipes in Columbus, Ohio, and has had a hand in training many other carvers at the beginning stages of their own careers. Here, the artisan presents a Freehand take on the bent Dublin. The transition is pinched at the flanks but stout in profile, flicking upward at the end. The face of the shank, then, is kissed with plateau and defined by a ridgeline about the edge that curves into the underside. The hard rim of the shank face converges into a single ridgeline at the piece's heel, curving upward through the bowl's fore to terminate at the rim. Slightly offset, this hard line adds some asymmetry to the piece. The bowl flares boldly into a scalloped rim, the plateau of which echoes that of the shank face, and the beautiful flame grain across the flanks further commends the composition.
