American Estates: Wayne Teipen Sandblasted Apple with Briar Stem and Bamboo (2014) (Unsmoked)
Product Number: 004-009-12263
While we've received a few Wayne Teipen pipes as estates over the years, this particular piece is quite unique. This is the first one we've seen from Wayne to feature a bamboo shank extension, a reverse metal tenon for added durability, and wearing a stem that's rendered from briar. While those aspects are quite impressive by themselves, the shaping and finish here are well executed. Up front, the bowl is rather squat and displays some additional plumpness around its low-set waistline. The crisp sandblast has unveiled some rich texture and is dressed in a dark, earthy brown contrast stain. The shank is then extended by two pale knuckles of bamboo and the reverse tenon design means this pipe can be broken down even when still hot, without running the risk of damaging the shank and mortise. The briar stem contributes further to the piece's diverse color palette and results in an artisan pipe with plenty of unique charm. Unsmoked.= Jeffery Sitts
