American Estates: Michael Frey Smooth Bent Apple (1988) (Unsmoked)
Product Number: 004-009-12391
Before retiring, Michael Frey learned pipemaking from Michael Butera starting in the 1980s. Frey's pipes often exhibit the popular style of that era — bold, bowl-centric proportions that call to mind the aesthetic of many Italian makers. This bent Apple from 1988, while muscular and substantial at the bowl, keeps its lines soft and supple, supported by the elegant stretch of shank and stem out back. The tranistion is well-defined and accentuates the bowl's voluptuous appeal, while the dark walnut stain brings out a handsome array of flame grain on this unsmoked piece.-Truett Smith
