American Estates: J. Alan Smooth Linear Egg (1407) (2018)

Product Number: 004-009-12719

At first, I was unsure as to the logic behind the moniker of this briar from Jeff Gracik of J. Alan pipes. Linear? It's certainly not of the arrow-straight disposition this qualifier would imply. I suspected it may have something to do with the strong, well-defined sense of implied momentum the piece exhibits, charging forward and seeming to practically slice the air around it. It was only after experiencing this piece in hand that the rationale behind its name became readily apparent.

Beginning at the heel, traveling the length of the briar to wrap around the shank face and coming to rest just at the rim of the bowl's aft, is a subtle, unyielding line. It's an understated, almost Fugu-like ridge, though definitely not as tightly pinched, serving to accentuate the piece's soft, yet eager curvature, and likewise framing a brilliant cross-cut grain pattern, with pools of birdseye at each bulbous flank. The mortise is secured with a ring of brass, lending the composition just a light bit of flash, along with a touch of utility. This is an undeniably comforting smoker, both visually and in hand, and sure to be a welcome addition to your collection.
