American Estates: Michael Butera Prima Vera Vintage Classic Bent Bulldog (B85) (9) (10)

Product Number: 004-009-12819

Mike Butera's first pipe show was in 1985, and he won the award for best standard shape that year, and he won awards at virtually every pipe show following for the next nine years. Low production and high collector appeal make his pipes hard to find, but they show up now and then. This bent Bulldog is a classic example, presenting a rounded, bulbous bowl with two beadlines circling the bowl just above the transition. That transition is seamless, introducing a shank that tapers and reduces toward the mouthpiece, which continues the taper all the way to the lip button. The grain is excellent, circling the bowl with growth rings and riding vertically up the bowl in strands of grain. We can't identify the year this piece was made, unfortunately, as it was not stamped with the year. This Bulldog rests easily in hand and offers a slender and lithe interpretation of the usually more structured, traditional shape.
