American Estates: Hedelson Smooth Dublin (D) (Unsmoked)
Product Number: 004-009-17912
Hired in the 1970s to assist with Michael Kabik's Sven Lar pipes, Glen Hedelson brought fresh ideas to the brand's approach to design and quickly became a talented carver. Hedelson eventually retired from pipemaking in the '80s, furthered his education and became a high school science teacher in Maryland. The majority of Glen's creations we've seen over the years have primarily been striking, Danish Fancy-inspired Freehands, making this Dublin quite a dramatic departure from that style. The shank is nearly an oval shape in cross-section, its subtle ridgelines creating a firm, protruding heel spur. From that crisp heel, the bowl begins its conservative flare, culminating in a jagged, plateau-crowned rim. The bowl is surrounded by stunning straight grain, tastefully illuminated by a light chestnut stain while the stem's fluting channels contribute even more playfulness to the design. Best of all, it's offered here in unsmoked condition.- Jeffery Sitts
