American Estates: Hedelson Smooth Freehand
Product Number: 004-009-17939
Originally hired by Michael Kabik, the man behind the Sven-Lar and CHP-X brands, Glen Hedelson began carving pipes in the 1970s when he was finishing up his stint in the Navy. He quickly developed and refined his pipemaking skills, with Kabik insisting that Hedelson stamp his name on the pipes he worked on. Glen eventually retired from the craft in the 1980s, went back to school and became a high school science teacher. Thankfully his work can be admired as estates with this impressive Freehand demonstrating his shaping talents. The bowl rises tall and proud from the sweeping shank, its asymmetric rim topped with plateau. A firm, disc-shaped ridgeline wraps around the transition before giving way to the sinuously bent oval shank and serpentine-esque saddle stem. All of these shaping elements were carefully considered and calculated, informed by the stunning flame grain that wraps around the bowl.- Jeffery Sitts
