American Estates: Chheda Smooth Apple (265) (6) (2014)
Product Number: 004-009-12940
Premal Chheda makes pipes in Columbus, Ohio, and has had a hand in training many other carvers at the beginning stages of their own careers, with artisans like Bill Shalosky and Jesse Jones spending time crafting pieces in Chheda's workshop. This particular piece from 2014 exemplifies Premal's robust approach to classic shapes: an impressively wide, plump Apple. The bowl wears its waistline low, subtly tapering from its bulging flanks up toward the rim, the bowl Pot-like in its breadth. The thick, oval shank continues the bowl's heartiness with the saddle stem allowing the stummel to remain the focal point. And while typically Chheda finishes his pipes in a sandblast, this example showcases his ability to render some lovely smooth pieces. Swirling birdseye patterns dominate the rim and the entire underside while streaks of vertical grain cascade down the bowl's flanks,- Jeffery Sitts
