Among Mark Tinsky's various series, the Black and Tan is a standout, featuring a lively contrast between dark, gnarly rustication and smooth, contrast-stained briar. For this bent Brandy, the contrast is especially compelling, with rustication covering the domed heel from below the transition and forward, counterbalancing the black, tapered stem. The carver's "star" stamps designate pipes with exceptional grain, from one to four. The grain on this piece is impressive and rare, with two stars.
